What is “shadow work”, and do you need it?
What is “shadow”?
The term “shadow”, in psychology, refers to unconscious, repressed thoughts and behaviors. (In the video I said unrepressed but I meant repressed.)
What is “shadow work”?
In the context of coaching, the goal of shadow work is to process and integrate unconscious, repressed aspects of the mind, for example to overcome fears or limiting beliefs.
Do you need shadow work?
My recommendation is that you focus on your goals, and only deal with the limiting beliefs that are in the way of reaching that goal.
If you overly focus on shadows, there is a risk that you will get stuck in a loop of processing problem after problem.
Conclusion:
Focus on your goals. As you take action towards your goals, it is likely that there will be times when you need to overcome personal fears, limiting beliefs, or doubts. In those instances, resolve the obstacles, and continue taking action towards your goals.
