Elevation & Levels of Intent
What are Levels of Intent?
Your “Levels of Intent” are your personal hierarchy of needs. Your list of what is essential to you, ordered by importance. From the most basic needs, to the highest levels of intent, such as transcendence, contribution, love, purpose.
Your levels of intent are a reminder of your core values, your North Star, your ultimate life purpose.
How do you find your Levels of Intent?
The best way to crystalize your core values, that I have found, is through an exercise called Elevation. It’s something I’ve learned in my coaching training, and it was by far the most eye-opening exercise I went through.
The exercise guides you through all your levels of intent (usually 7-9 levels), from the most fundamental, to the top levels. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the deepest meaning of one’s life.
I have a note of my personal levels of intent on my phone, and I remind myself daily of my higher purpose.
All my clients have gone through this exercise, usually on the first meeting. I prefer giving this exercise as early as possible, since I’d rather focus on the most important questions – the top levels.
When faced with what is of highest essence, the smaller issues fade. It makes it clear which questions are worth focusing on, what to prioritize, and how to make most use of our time.
